BIR Form 2550M

Monthly Value-Added Tax Declaration — filed by VAT-registered businesses every 20th of the following month to report output and input VAT.

BIR Form 2550M is the monthly VAT declaration filed by all VAT-registered businesses in the Philippines. It is due on the 20th day of the month following the reporting period (or the next business day if the 20th falls on a holiday or weekend). Electronic filers using eBIRForms or eFPS have deadlines that may vary by taxpayer group.

The form requires you to report total sales (VATable, VAT-exempt, and zero-rated), the 12% output VAT collected, total purchases eligible for input VAT credit, and the net VAT payable (output VAT minus creditable input VAT). If input VAT exceeds output VAT, the excess becomes a carry-over credit to the next period.

In practice: Reyna Hardware in Cebu had ₱500,000 in VATable sales for March, collecting ₱60,000 in output VAT. During the same month it purchased supplies with ₱40,000 in input VAT. Net VAT due = ₱60,000 − ₱40,000 = ₱20,000, paid on or before April 20.

Why it matters: Late filing triggers a 25% surcharge plus 12% annual interest on the unpaid amount, plus compromise penalties. For businesses with tight margins, accumulating VAT penalties quickly becomes a serious liability. Filing on time — even if you cannot pay the full amount — limits the damage.

Note that 2550M has been phased out for some eFPS taxpayer groups who file quarterly (2550Q only). Check your RDO registration and eFPS enrollment to confirm your specific filing obligations.
